When the corps went to New Orleans in 1968 for the Legion Nationals, a drum major by the name of Bruce Smith had a aunt who lived just outside of New Orleans. So Bruce - without telling anyone - took a cab to the town she lived in. When he got out of the cab, he was just across the street from the local jail. A girl waved to him from inside her cell. He waved back, at that moment the police arrested him and took in inside. Lucky for him the cab driver saw everything. He went to the hotel and got Al Beck and Bill Robinson back to bail out Bruce.
Now here's the kicker, Two months before Bruce was a member of NYPD.
